My dream LYS
All these struggling with looking for new jobs, and making jewelry for selling is for one thing: my future LYS. The first proper LYS in Hungary. I tell you how I want it to be:
It would be a nice, friendly place, with quality yarns. No acrylic. There is a few yarn shops in Hungary, and they sell ONLY acrylic. Enough of that.
My LYS will keep nice, interesting, and quality yarns. I want to introduce the country that not only acrylic and polyester yarns exist, because only a few of them know.
I want to show them real wool: not the itchy type, because they think: wool equals itching.
I want to show them the beautiful soft merinos, the superwashes, the ones you can wear next to your skin. I want to show them that there is silk, seaweed, milk, soy, corn, yak, camel, tencel, lyocel, and so much more to make yarn from! I would keep the pricey range, but of course the affordable brands as well. As long as they are quality. I had the pleasure to knit out of really good stuff, and boy, there is a difference!!! This is what makes knitting addictive.
And after I have the most wonderful yarn collection, I will set up the most exciting notions collection. People in Hungary doesn’t know what stich markers are for! We do not have even a word for it. My mom, who is a knitter of a lifetime, uses yarn pieces to mark stitches, and I was the first who showed her a stitch marker. She has about 5 or 6 pieces of knitting needles, one of each size she uses the most, and doesn’t start a new project until she finishes the first. OK, she is organised. But she just doesn’t understand the whole concept of having a selection of needles to choose from. To feel the joy of holding a nice needle, to feel the difference between metal and bamboo.
Point protectors. I guess the knitters’ 95 % never heard of them, or what they are good for. And I could go on and on with notions.
I want to show them the FUN of knitting. I want my LYS to be light, airy, not overcrowded with selves or tables. But of course there has to be a comfy table where people can sit down, do their own business, knit a little, have a coffee, or just chat.
I want it to be a place where people will turn up from time to time, to have a chat and meet the others, without feeling the pressure of buying something. And they of course will buy things, when they are tempted. And this is where I come in: I will tempt them for sure!
I would do classes: beading and crochet, knitting and other crafts, if there is a need for it.
Oh, my God, if I only could do it! I’m working on it, and I do hope that in 5 years time, I will be able to open this sweet shop. You are all welcome there.
Yes, I’m two balls sort with the Caftan pullover. Never mind. I knew this is going to be my most expensive project ever, so two or three more balls will not matter. I’ve been searching the net for an economic solution, and I think I have found the best source on Ebay. With 5,40 per [...]
I had no idea that there were so many different types of yarn - that is so cool!
